Laughter is a powerful thing, and almost never is it more important then when you are dating. Making a girl laugh not only makes her feel happy instantly, it also helps you to establish a connection with her and she will remember you as someone who is fun to hang out with. The key to making a girl laugh is finding a connection and ..well having something funny to say about it!
Conversations usually work something like this. Person A tells a story, person B listens, person B comments, person A responds, person A or or person B find a connection, person A or B tell another story ..and so on. A story can be anything..it doesn’t necessarily have to follow an actual story line - it’s just conversation. Now to make your date laugh you need to find a connection.
Let’s say the girl you are on a date with starts talking about people at her office and how stupid they are. You happen to know someone you used to work with who was absolutely ridiculous. One day he came into the office wearing a bunny suit and he couldn’t see very well and ran right into you! You tripped and fell, spilling your coffee all over the photo copy machine which ironically was printing out an office memo on proper work attire! You see, she started by telling you a story - about her stupid co-workers, that story had a connection to your own funny story - which you shared, and now you’ve established a real connection between you and your date and hopefully made her laugh too!
It really is that simple, and the more stories you have the better chances you have of finding one that fits within your conversation with your date. The more practice you have at telling the stories - the better they will sound and the funnier they will be!

Do you have to establish a connection before you share a funny story, or can you just tell her funny jokes and stuff like that? Which works better? Do women only like funny men?

You don’t HAVE to establish a connection if you’re good at working unrelated jokes or funny stories in, go for it. The important thing is that she is able to laugh and have a good time with you. Generally though that approach means you need to read the girl and make sure you read her body language RIGHT. Otherwise you risk offending your date.
Keep in mind though that on first dates it is very important that you establish some sort of connection. Whether it be through having a good time, or sharing similar stories a connection is vital for a girl to feel attracted to you.
One other thing to keep in mind is that some girls may laugh out loud at your stories..while others may giggle to themselves even though they find you really funny, so pay attention to the subtle cues. Some girls are shy while others are more outgoing in expressing their interest and feelings.
